LOUISIANA, MO. -- There is a story about the passage of the 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution that you will not find in the recent Spielberg movie about Abraham Lincoln.

It's the story of John Brooks Henderson.

Henderson was a close confidant of Lincoln and is credited with co-authoring and co-sponsoring the 13th amendment.

Though born in Virginia, he called Louisiana, Missouri home for many years.

Several locations in the community memorialize his contribution to history.

Later this year local playwright Brent Engel hopes to put on a play he is writing about Henderson's life and contribution to American history.

Engel also says that Henderson changed the way we look at the Constitution.

Engel says, "We see the Constitution as a living breathing document. At the time they saw it as something, most people in the 1860s saw it as something that was etched in stone. That's why it hadn't been changed in 6 decades."

Henderson also was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the passage of the 14th and 15th amendments.

A skit about Henderson will be performed March 25 at the Louisiana Chamber of Commerce banquet.
