A Colchester man is preparing for a 4,500 mile journey north, following in the footsteps of two of America's most famous pioneers.

Noel Oliver will travel across the same lands first traveled by Lewis and Clark in 1804. Not only will this be a once in lifetime experience for Oliver, but his adventure will also become an educational tool for students.

"I can remember standing on the banks of the river when I was probably 13-years-old and thinking, this is where this started and I've always wanted to do it," Oliver said.

Now a retired police officer, Oliver has the time and resources to make the trip from north of St. Louis to just south of Seattle. But you'll notice it's not the most direct route you'd take today and far more costly than the original trip.

"President [Thomas] Jefferson gave Lewis and Clark $2,500 to make this trip and I won't be able to do it for twice that," Oliver said.

Oliver's dedicated a month of his time for his Lewis and Clark adventure. He's spent the last few weeks visiting with elementary schools in the Tri-State area currently learning about this time in our country's history. Monday he stopped by Terri Burnham's fourth grade class at St. Paul School, in Macomb.

"Every night, I can input where I've been for the day, put in all my data, all the photographs and publish it on this Website, OliverCorpsofDiscovery.info, and the next day when they come to school they can see where I'm at and what I'm doing," Oliver said.

Students from all over the world will watch his every move on this site, including a group of students from the Netherlands. It'll be their first time learning American history.

"This time of the year, I think I'm going to run into a lot of snow in the mountains and high elevations. I don't plan to stay in my truck, but I will have my survival gear to do that if I need to," Oliver said.

Oliver's gear will be much more advanced than what Lewis and Clark carried.

"The new clothing that will keep you warm in sub-zero weather instead of wearing a buffalo skin, you're right," Oliver smiled.

The adventure that took Lewis and Clark two years. Oliver hopes to accomplish it in a month.
