HANNIBAL, MO. -- Look for Mark Twain on a coin near you ... sort of.

President Obama has signed the bill that will have the U.S. Mint producing a one dollar silver and a five dollar gold coin featuring Mark Twain.

The coin is slated to be in production beginning in 2016.

The sale of the coins will generate revenue for sites that have a direct connection to Twain, including Hannibal.

It's been almost a decade long process, but within a matter of days and with the signature of the president of the United States, a commemorative Mark Twain coin will be approved to be minted.

There are only two coins a year that are produced and minted by the U.S. Mint. And the Mark Twain coin is slated to be in production beginning in 2016.

Cindy Lovell is the executive director of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum in Hannibal and she says the sale of the one dollar silver and five dollar gold coins will generate revenue for sites that have a direct connection to Twain.

"They're expecting that each of the four Mark Twain sites, that will be us here in Hannibal and the Hartford home in Connecticut and Elmira College and U.C. Berkeley where the Mark Twain project is housed. Each of those four entities can each expect to receive about one point seven million dollars," Lovell said.

There will only be a certain amount coins produced in 2016.

Only about 100,000 five dollar gold coins will be struck, while there will be about 350 thousand one dollar silver coins produced.

Lovell says there will be a slight service charge for the purchase of each coin and that's where the revenue will be generated.
