HANNIBAL, MO. -- New equipment is on the way for the Hannibal Police Department.
Tuesday night, the Hannibal City Council approved the purchase of 10 bullet resistant vests.
Chief Lyndell Davis said the vests are for both new hires and for veteran officers who needed replacements.
He says officers get a replacement vest every five years.
"In law enforcement, we talk about them as body armor or bullet resistant," Davis said. "There's really no such thing as bullet proof. That's a misnomer because anything can fail, but it is a crucial piece of equipment. We always make sure they have a top quality vest."
Davis said each vest cost between $525 to $575 a piece, which is much cheaper than buying them from other suppliers.
The U.S. Department of Justice pays for 50 percent of the cost.
