HANNIBAL, MO. -- UPDATED: April 6 at 9:12 p.m.

Residents who live just outside of Hannibal's city limits turned out for a third and final public meeting on annexation Wednesday night.

The city has proposed annexing areas on the northwest part of the city, which has grown according to recent census figures.

That would help the city's population figures.

But many residents who turned out for Wednesday night's meeting oppose that idea.

Brad Willett is a concerned resident. He said, "I think the city has heard that a majority of the people outside the city are just not interested in becoming a part of the incorporated community. They enjoy living in the county."

What happens if no one's interested?

Fourth Ward Alderman Barry Louderman said, "We just keep plugging away. As a councilman, I think it's our job to always look forward and of course looking forward involves annexation."

Louderman told KHQA Wednesday's meeting was less hostile than last week's public meeting.

He says those interested in becoming annexed should contact an alderman or the city.

As Hannibal inches westward, city boundaries are being reconsidered.

An annexation hearing is scheduled for Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at city hall.

Current census numbers show growth in the Veterans Road area on both sides of US 36.

Historic Hannibal areas saw dips in population.

City leaders are interested in offering voluntary annexation to people who live just outside city limits.

Many residents oppose the idea.

We'll have a full report from the meeting on KHQA Late News at 10 p.m.
