With a few rounds of winter weather under our belts, many are talking how the snow impacts our on-going drought.
I recently had someone ask me if the foot of snow in Iowa a couple of weeks ago made up for our sixteen inch rainfall shortage of the past year.
In my answer, I had to explain to them what many of us have forgotten from third grade ... that one foot of snow is only equal to about an inch of rainfall. So, based on that equation the answer is no.
It would take at least ten feet of snowfall to make up for the current rainfall deficit in many parts of the Midwest.
The current U.S. Drought Monitor has a majority of the Tri-State area still in the moderate to severe drought intensity index.
The drought conditions are much worse just to our west as states from South Dakota to Texas are listed in the "Extreme" to "Exceptional" drought intensity index.
