Old cemetery site remains, home long gone

Hannibal, MO-- In March of 2007, you'll remember human remains were found under a home in Hannibal.

Turns out the house at 705 Paris Avenue was built on top of of an old cemetery that dated back to the 1800's.  We recently received a viewer concern about that old site.  They specifically wanted to know what's the status of the old cemetery.

We called Hannibal's City Manager Jeff LaGarce, and here's what we found out.  LaGarce told us that home was torn down last fall.  He says the cemetery still remains.  In fact, it may sit under several homes on that street.

We also found out that the cemetery is private property.  A Hannibal man owned the home a few years ago, then a lien was placed on it.  A bank in Omaha, Nebraska now owns it.

The city building inspector told us, the owners are required to maintain the property.
