CEDAR FALLS, IOWA (AP) -- The Iowa Board of Regents takes up options for state's three public universities in the wake of proposed budget cuts.

The regents, meeting in Cedar Falls on Thursday, will hear from the presidents of the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa on their plans to offset a $58 million cut in state aid.

University officials have been mum about proposed cuts, including whether some programs would be eliminated.

The regents are urging university leaders to consider a one-time $100 tuition surcharge next semester and employee pay cuts, furloughs and layoffs, among other cuts.
