QUINCY, ILL. -- Freezing temperatures created a close call for one area resident.

The Quincy Fire Department responded to this house in the 2200 block of South 8th Street shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Fire Chief Joe Henning told KHQA the homeowner was using a heating device to try to thaw frozen pipes.

Luckily no one was hurt, and the house only had minor damages. But Henning said this case serves as a reminder.

He said, "Especially if you're trying to heat pipes at all, you don't want to leave it unattended."

Thankfully, the homeowner on South 8th Street was home and was able to call the fire department.

We asked Henning how firefighters are holding up in these frigid temperatures.

He said they haven't had a lot of structure fires lately, but he says crews are trained to keep themselves and their equipment warm in extreme temperatures.

Henning also wanted to warn area residents to be patient when and if calling the fire department these days.

He says crews will be on the scene as soon as possible, but snow and ice could slow them down.
