LEWIS CO., MO. -- Another hot weekend on tap, and if you're wanting to spend some time on area lakes, we have some KHQA Safe Family information to pass along to you.

The lake at Wakonda State Park is still closed to the public because of high bacteria levels.

According to the Missouri DNR, a lot of rain in parts of Northeast Missouri has elevated the bacteria in the water.

It's not just the rain, but other factors like water runoff and high water levels contribute to the problem.

Wakonda is sampled every Monday and there was a lot of rain the weekend before crews went out to test.

Staff has been checking bath houses and latrines at the state park and there is no indication of leakage from those.

There has also been elevated bacteria readings at Mark Twain Lake every week except this one.

DNR is having trouble pinpointing the problem.

More investigation is ongoing, but it is rare that only one factor that contributes to the high readings.

There are three beaches that are closed at Mark Twain Lake because of high water.
