Rail Safety Week in Missouri is April 25-29, 2011
BOWLING GREEN, MO. -- Railroad crossings and tracks can be dangerous places for motorists.
The Missouri Department of Transportation, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, local law enforcement agencies, Missouri Operation Lifesaver and various railroad companies are trying to get the word out about railroad crossing safety.
Rail Safety Week in Missouri runs from April 25-29.
The agencies will visit crossings in Bowling Green, Curryville and Louisiana.
Even reporters covering the story are being asked to stay 50 feet away from the tracks.
In fact, engineers say that every vehicle should stop at least 15 feet before every railroad crossing, stop, and look both ways before proceeding.
Railroad workers agree that should happen regardless of if a crossing has flashing lights or stop arms.
Engineers also wish people would turn down their radios and roll down their windows to listen for a train even if they don't see one coming.
Melissa Shriver will have more from Bowling Green on KHQA's news at 5, 6 and 10 on Tuesday, April 26, 2011.
