Recent stormy weather, means that everyone in the Tri-States is on high alert for severe storms and tornados.

So when we heard from a Facebook Fan early Wednesday morning that a tornado siren went off in Bowling Green when there was no tornado, we sent out our reporter first thing.

It happened around 2 in the morning.

Pike County, Missouri Sheriff Stephen Korte says the siren was hit by lightning.

It went off for about twenty minutes until a Bowling Green Police officer manually turned it off.

The contractor who installed the siren come out and look at it so this doesn't happen again.

If it does, you should still take it seriously.

Korte says, "Whether you live in the city or out in the county, sirens don't reach everywhere. Tornado sirens are based and designed for outside use, where people if you're outside you'll hear them. A lot of times, especially with a new house, they're built with good insulation so you might not hear it inside. So, you need to have those weather alert radios that'll go off so you'll be for sure what's going on."

We will bring you more information on this shortly, so check this story later and watch KHQA's News at Five, KHQA's Evening News at 6 p.m. and KHQA's Late News at 10 p.m.
