There are more than 750 million people on Facebook and the social network is at least trying to make things simpler for users.

Have you ever been tagged in a photo that's embarrassing or unflattering? You haven't been able to control that, but now you will. Facebook will now let you pre-approve photos before your friends can post them with your name attached.

Currently, your friends can add your name to a photo without your consent or knowledge. You can remove it later, but only after people may have seen the embarrassing shots. Now, you can insist on pre-approval. Essentially, you will be able to approve or reject tags that are added by other people.

This won't affect whether your friends can add a photo of you, only whether your name is attached to it and whether it shows up on your page. That affects how easily people can search for the photo based on your name.

Another change coming is your ability to change your mind about who can see a photo or status update after it's made. Facebook's competitor Google Plus already does this.

Facebook says the change comes in response to user requests. Click here to see what some of the changes will look like.

Instead of going to a separate settings page, the new controls will be on users' pages, next to the posts and photos they share.

The changes go into effect on Thursday. Read more about the changes.

Here's what some people are saying about the changes online:

"this is stupid. you can have facebook or you can have anonymity but you can't have both and that's obviously what this is an attempt at."

"I like the tag verification option. It stinks getting tagged in photos you have/want nothing to do with."
