LaHood stepping down from transportation post

Will leave at the end of President's current term

Ray LaHood is stepping down as U.S. Transportation Secretary at the end of President Obama's current term.

LaHood made the announcement at a luncheon on Thursday.

President -Elect Obama, named LaHood to that post in December of 2008.

LaHood who had served as Congressman for the 18th district retired after 14 years on the job.

He had served 12 years as the chief of staff for for House Minority Leader Bob Michael.

He was elected to Congress in 1994 after Michael retired.

LaHood gave no reason for his retirement at the luncheon.

During his time as Transportation secretary Ray LaHood has focussed on job creation, infrastructure improvements and safer driving.
