QUINCY, ILL. -- UPDATED: May 15 at 9 p.m.
A five-alarm fire Tuesday night destroyed a Doyle Manufacturing building in Quincy.
The fire began in the the east side of the building that contained the powder coat paint department. The fire was under control by about 7:30 p.m.
One person fled the building as the fire began at about 6 p.m. No injuries were reported.
The building at 4001 Broadway collapsed as the Quincy Fire Department worked to contain the blaze.
Reports from the scene said that small explosions were heard from inside the building.
Assistant Fire Chief Robert Tipton said the cause of the fire isn't known.
Plumes of smoke from the blaze could be seen from areas all over the city.
Doyle Manufacturing President Monty Doyle said this powder coat department prepared and blasted the company's metal before painting the products.
"It was dried powder for a powder coat painting process, which is not flammable or highly volatile," Tipton said, "What you heard when you heard explosions is there was some flammable containers in there that were inside."
"Everybody's in shock right now. It wasn't something we expected when we left here at 5:00. It sure wasn't something for me to come back to," Manager Colt Doyle said.
Doyle said the company plans to rebuild.
"This is over. We have to worry about tomorrow and taking care of employees, customers and moving forward," Doyle said.
A cause has not been determined.
The fire closed a large stretch of Broadway from 38th Street to 48th Street. The street reopened around 9 p.m.
