QUINCY, ILL. -- The Gus Macker tournament isn't only bringing basketball back to Washington Park.

The three-on-three tourney is also responsible for the return of picnic tables. While they comply with ADA standards now, that wasn't the case a few weeks ago.

"We had park visitors who were moving the tables back under the sheltered area at the Lincoln visitors center," Ed Seger, Quincy Park District Executive Director said.

The Quincy Park District got rid of the tables less than a month ago but not because they were being moved, it was for where they were being left.

"It's really the access issue and the ability of the public to get to the Lincoln information that is contained in this park and not have to walk around," Seger said.

Seger says that picnic tables left at the Lincoln visitor center block the path of travel, which violates ADA regulations.

"You can imagine someone in a wheelchair or a walker or something else having to be forced onto the grass or perhaps more likely someone who is able bodied feeling uncomfortable not being able to read the signs," Seger said.

The park district decided to bring the picnic tables back for the Gus Macker tournament, but it has a plan to keep them out of pathways.

"We're going to try to position them so they're not really around areas where we really don't want the tables to be, across sidewalks and blocking places where people aren't suppose to have access to," Seger said.

And if that doesn't work there is a plan B.

"If there's a problem with them and they keep getting moved to places we just don't want them to, then we'll probably have to anchor them, that's probably the next fall back position," Seger said.
