QUINCY, ILL. -- The Girl Scouts of Central Illinois could get a new home ... and it might be near you.

The organization is in the final stages of buying land for a new program center and campsite in the Hickory Grove subdivision on Quincy's east side. But people who live near the location have some concerns.

"Well when this starts I probably won't be able to park in the back, I'll have too ... I don't know," Carroll Bolen said.

Parking isn't the only thing Bolen is worried about if the Girl Scouts build its new facility across from his backyard. He's also concerned that the quiet atmosphere, the reason he bought his home will be gone.

"We go to bed sometimes at 7 or 8 o'clock and they said they could stay up till 10 p.m. then it isn't going to be no good," Bolen said.

But it will be good for local Girl Scouts.

"We have a growing membership of Girl Scouts in West Central Illinois and it is our responsibility as an organization to serve them in the best way that we can and what they're telling us is that they want to experience the outdoors and they want opportunities in this area," Erica Douglas of Girl Scouts of Central Illinois said.

The five acre location already has a pond and a cabin that will be kept for camping activities. A new 4200 square foot program center will go up across the driveway from the cabin. The organization is also taking in neighbors concerns for its design.

"We are trying to maximize the space between where our programming will happen and the nearby residents," Douglas said. "The property as it stands now has a natural screening of trees and a ravine and one of the considerations that we're looking into is to possibly adding an additional foliage or trees to address that."

Still Bolen is worried.

"They're going to be right up to our backdoor," Bolen said. "They could actually come up and take part of your property and everything else and we don't doubt that, that might happen."

The land purchase is not finalized. It still has to pass certain inspections and receive a permit from the Quincy City Council to allow overnight camping.

Tuesday night, Quincy's planning commission voted to recommend approving the overnight camping permit. The city council will vote on that recommendation at this Monday's meeting.
