CANTON, MO. -- UPDATED: July 7 at 3:25 p.m.

The cause of a house fire in Canton Thursday night remains undetermined.

Canton Fire Chief Jeff McReynolds said the blaze started in the garage of a home at 801 White Street around 9 p.m.

Five fire departments responded to the late night fire.

There were initial reports of explosions in the garage before the fire spread to the main home.

Firefighters returned to the scene Friday morning as the rubble began to smoke.

McReynolds said the owners were away on vacation, but were expected to return to Canton Friday evening.

McReynolds said he's thankful that the fire happened at night and not during the heat of the day. Still, firefighters were checked periodically to make sure they weren't overheated.
