Three Palmyra residents notified police after a phone call soliciting money claimed that they won big in the Publisher's Clearinghouse sweepstakes.
Police Chief Eddie Bogue said the Palmyra residents were promised hundreds of thousands of dollars. The phone calls appear to be a part of a larger nationwide scam in communities across the country.
The phone calls originate in the state of New York, but request that the recipients contact a Western Union telephone number based in Jamaica.
Bogue contacted Publisher's Clearinghouse which said that anyone who receives a prize over $10,000 will receive a visit from a company official.
“These are highly non-prosecutable crimes because we cannot prosecute outside our borders,” Bogue said.
Anyone who receives a phone call is asked to contact the Publisher's Clearinghouse fraud department at 1-800-392-4190.
