QUINCY, ILL. -- Repair or replace. That's the question the Oakley Lindsey Civic Center Board in Quincy is facing.
And what they're talking about is the roof over the south half of the building's exhibition hall.
The discussion has come up because the civic center staff discovered a leak in the roof just a couple of weeks ago.
"Well our feeling is, if the contractor can come in and say he feels he can repair the seems and give us another three to five years life span on that old roof. So we want to see what that cost is to gain that three to five years, and if that is cost is in favor of doing that inexpensive versus putting on a new roof, we'll go that route," OLC Executive Director Rob Ebbing said.
Ebbing also said that portion of the roof that is in question is the original, dating back to 1995. He said the roof over the Kent Exhibition Hall was replaced back in 2008. And Ebbing also said there doesn't seem to be any other issues with the roof in other areas of the building. He thinks the hot dry summer played a part in what they're having to deal with now. He went on to say, as for the cost for either a repair job or a major roof replacement, he doesn't want to guess until he sees numbers from the contractor.
"Well if we end up having to replace that roof, we've got the reserve money that is held by the city. We've got some bond money still held back that is earmarked for potential issues like the roof," Ebbing said.
Ebbing pointed out that whatever decision is made, he hopes to get the project underway soon. He said he'd like to have everything completed before winter sets in the next few months.
