The sounds of the Salvation Army bells are kind of the unofficial start to the holiday season.

The Quincy Salvation Army is recruiting volunteers to man bells all over the city starting on Veteran's Day. The bell ringing goes through Christmas Eve.

The money raised through the bell ringing campaign helps support Salvation Army services all year long.

Just about anyone can volunteer.

"Anybody can volunteer. We take children's groups. We take adult groups, families, individuals, corporations. In fact, we're tracking the amount that people bring in as an individual or as an organization or a group. The winners get a great prize. They can use the Kroc Center for one day," Major Dan Jennings with the Quincy Salvation Army said.

To volunteer, you can call your local Salvation Army or stop their office.

Or you can sign up on line at www.ringbells.org.
