Quincy fire department reminds residents to stay safe

QUINCY, IL -- It was a close call for a few Quincy residents on the city's south side.

Fire crews responded to this duplex at 520 Madison Friday morning, after a resident saw heavy black smoke coming from the chimney.

The smoke may have been the result of one of the residents burning plastic in their fireplace, but fire officials won't confirm that.

A firefighter on the scene told KHQA that there was nothing found out of the ordinary in the home.

With temperatures getting cooler, fire officials have a reminder so you stay safe.

"This is a busy time of year for your furnaces and there's nothing like having peace of mind before you start those things up so that you're confident there's not a problem," said Quincy Firefighter Michael Dade.

Remember, it's never a good idea to burn plastic products. They release toxic chemicals that can be hazardous to your health.

Also, remember to check your smoke detectors. It's a good idea to check them twice a year around Daylight Saving time, which is coming up on November 2nd.

There should be one on every level of your home, and should be in or near bedrooms.
