NEW YORK (AP) — Hundreds of tons of Brooklyn's garbage is now being shipped out of New York City by rail. It's part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's plan to overhaul the city's trash disposal.
The mayor is unveiling a new transfer station in Williamsburg. Some 950 tons of waste each day is now being loaded onto rail cars and sent to disposal sites outside the city.
Bloomberg wants to dispose of New York City's trash by train and barge, instead of trucks, as a way to cut pollution and improve traffic.
All of the trash in the Bronx is shipped by rail. The city plans to break ground on a waterside transfer station in Queens and another in Brooklyn before the end of the year.
