Bill repealing helmet requirement OK'ed

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- The Missouri Senate has endorsed legislation that would let people 21 and older ride motorcycles without helmets.
A decades-old state law requires all motorcycle riders to wear helmets. But some lawmakers have tried in recent years to repeal the law, arguing that the mandate infringes on civil liberties.
Senators this year tacked the helmet provisions onto a larger bill on motorcycle insurance. The helmet amendment was approved Monday with little debate.
The bill needs another vote before moving to the House, which generally has been more receptive to efforts to repeal helmet requirements for adults.
Critics of the legislation say letting people ride motorcycles without helmets drives up health care costs.
