Will merge with Illini West system; tenured teachers up for review

DALLAS CITY, IL -- Teachers in a local school district are wondering where they're going to be working next year.

That's because the Dallas City school board is putting all teachers and staff on notice for a reduction-in-force.

Dallas City high school students will become part of the Illini West merger with Carthage and LaHarpe.

But Dallas City would still maintain an elementary school district.

The board held a public hearing before voting to eliminate all staff and teachers, with the exception of tenured teachers.

But tenured teachers aren't out of the woods. The board has scheduled a similar meeting for them next week on March 20.

The school board said its attorney recommended eliminating 100 percent of the staff, then rehiring those employees on a case-by-case basis.

Dallas City has about 50 employees; 11 are tenured teachers.

Now many of them will have to wait and see whether they'll have a job next year or not.
