COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA (AP) --
Thirty-seven-year-old Karl Schmidt Jr. is charged with eight counts of burglary, seven counts of theft, criminal mischief and ongoing criminal conduct. He was arrested Wednesday at a Council Bluffs house where he was staying.
The Pottawattamie County sheriff's office says four of the burglaries occurred recently during funerals. Sheriff Jeff Danker says it's also believed Schmidt is responsible for other residential and business burglaries in the area.
Officials say nearly $81,000 in property was stolen during the break-ins. Schmidt is being held in the Pottawattamie County jail under $200,000 bond.
