CHICAGO (AP) - Gov. Pat Quinn's office says budget cuts will require fewer staff and inmates at Illinois prisons.

Quinn chief of staff Jerome Stermer wouldn't say Friday how the number of prisoners would be reduced.

He said that will be announced later.

But he did acknowledge the current level of 45,000 inmates would be cut.

Stermer also says the size of Illinois prisons would be reduced because of the state budget crisis.

He said only one prison might be on the chopping block to close entirely.

Quinn is calling for about 1,000 job cuts at the Corrections Department.
