SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- The Chicago Tribune is trying to force the University of Illinois to reveal the names of well-connected applicants on its now-defunct Category I list.

The newspaper on Tuesday amended a June lawsuit filed in Sangamon County against the university.

The Tribune argues that the names on the list are crucial in determining why politicians and others tried to get special treatment for applicants they knew.

The university has denied requests for the names.

It says revealing them would violate the applicants' privacy.

The university used the list to track well-connected applicants.

Some were admitted over better-qualified students.

The June lawsuit seeks the applicants' high school grade-point averages and ACT scores.
