Central Service crews patch potholes
QUINCY, ILL. -- As temperatures warm up, you may see more work crews fixing problems caused by cold weather.
Quincy City Service workers were out fixing potholes and other problems on city streets. Pot holes are caused by the freeze, thaw effect. This happens when snow and ice thaw, water gets into the cracks of the road and re- freeze, causing the pavement to expand. Assistant Director of Operations for Quincy Central Services Richie Reis tells KHQA that their materials work best when temperatures reach the 30's and 40's. That's why crews stay proactive.
"We run crews during the winter time. There's at least one crew out all the time...otherwise there'd be a lot of potholes and front end damage on cars,"said Reis.
Reis says city crews can patch anywhere from 100 to 200 potholes.
