Spring planting could be tough this year

QUINCY, ILL. -- 2009 was one the wettest years on record, from planting season to harvest, wet soil was a huge problem for farmers.
Some farmers still were trying to get crops out of the fields as late as January.
So far, 2010 is not what they were hoping for.
Snow still covers much of the ground, and remnants of last year's harvest that didn't get tilled.
It will put them behind schedule even before they get started on spring planting this year.
Wet soil during harvest caused ruts in fields.
Deep ruts farmers have to work in the spring before they can plant.
Fertilizer did not get spread last year, soils are saturated, there is still snow cover on ground, and the ground is still frozen.
These are things we don't look forward to when we talk about March.
Once farmers can get into their fields, they'll need to spread nitrogen and anhydrous ammonia...then there's the chance of spring flooding to worry about.
It's going to be tough for farmers to get caught up.
There is only 24 hours in a day.
It's going to be tough for farmers to get a lot of things done with the weather forecast if it holds true.
That's why farmers in particular are looking forward to the warmer days predicted for this weekend, even with the rain in the forecast.
