KEOKUK, IA. -- Property taxes are going up in Keokuk.

The city council voted for the increase at last night's council meeting.

The rate jumps one dollar for every one thousand dollars of assessed value of your home.

KHQA spoke to Mayor Tom Marion about the increase.

He says it was needed so the city wouldn't dip into its reserves.

He also reminded everyone that a couple of years ago, the property tax was lowered.

Something else interesting came out of last night's meeting.

A man approached the council about buying the Keokuk Hamilton Railroad bridge for a half million dollars.

The man has a plan to pay for it over a ten year period.

The mayor says that proposal has been sent to the bridge committee.
