MACOMB, ILL. -- Devin VanBrooker, a dominating pitcher during his high school days at Southeastern High School and current starter for the Western Illinois Unviersity baseball squad, was killed late Tuesday night in a two-vehicle crash in Macomb.
The McDonough County Voice reports VanBrooker and a passenger, Whitley Klingler of Macomb, were riding a motorcycle on West Jackson Street in Macomb and struck a sports utility vehicle as it was making a left turn onto Charles Street in front of VanBrooker's motorcycle.
VanBrooker, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:50 p.m. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The police report states he had given it to his passenger, Klinger, who suffered a broken arm and leg in the collision after being thrown from the bike.
Funeral arrangements are still being planned in Augusta, although Southeastern school superintendent Todd Fox tells KHQA that a memorial may take place Friday at the high school.
WIU has cancelled its baseball game scheduled for today with Bradley University.
