SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- Illinois officials are seeking help from local governments in cracking down on unscrupulous roofing contractors.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation is asking local officials to review their local building codes and ensure that contractors seeking permits prove they have an active state license.

Local officials deciding on building permits may visit the IDFPR's website to review licenses.

State-licensed roofers are required to have insurance.

Unlicensed roofing is a crime.
