SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- The Illinois House has scheduled a series of hearings around the state in an effort to build support for reversing many of the governor's budget cuts.
House Speaker Michael Madigan calls the cuts, quote, "savage." He says Governor Rod Blagojevich vetoed parts of the budget as political vengeance against his legislative opponents.
Madigan plans 19 hearings starting next Wednesday and running through September 27.
Lawmakers could restore the cuts, but the president of the state Senate has said he won't allow any votes on the issue.
Blagojevich cut $463 million dollars out of the budget before signing it into law. He cut spending supported by House Democrats and Senate Republicans, two groups that opposed many of the governor's proposals.
The Democratic governor says he simply cut spending that wasn't necessary in a tight budget.
