HANNIBAL, MO. -- The fate of Hannibal Fire Chief Tim Carter could be decided at Tuesday night's city council meeting.

His term as chief expires Wednesday, September 22nd.

That means the city must decide whether he stays with the department, and in what role.

Now another twist in this long story...the Hannibal Courier Post reports an anonymous document has surfaced that urges the council to dismiss Carter.

The document was handed out to six councilmen, the mayor, and city attorney.

And that's expected to draw some fire at the council meeting.

You'll remember Carter was placed on paid administrative leave in November of 2009 with no public explanation.

He later was accused of acting unprofessionally and being derelict in his duties for alleged fraud, dishonesty, insubordination and oppression of others in the fire department.

Carter has denied all of this. Impeachment charges were brought against Carter earlier this year, but they were dropped in July.

Carter believes, according to the city charter, he must be put back to work at the fire department, even if it's not as chief.

The city attorney says the city charter would allow that.

Carter did get a chance to tell his side of the story to the Fire Board last month, but that discussion has not been made public.

The city council is set to meet at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night.

At least one of the councilmen hopes the issue is resolved.

Most of the discussion likely will take place in a closed door session of the council.

We'll be at the meeting and let you know the outcome on KHQA's Late News tonight at ten.
