QUINCY, ILL. -- Boy Scout Troop 22 from St. Francis School in Quincy teamed up with the Trees forTomorrow Program Saturday. The boys began mulching newly planted trees along Maine Street, ensuring that the street's canopy of trees receive the proper attention.

Over the years, Quincy has lost many of its majestic trees to disease, weather and landscaping.

Saturday, these troops mulched from 12th Street to 30th Street.

"They're at risk of dying. What we've got is some trees that are new and we want them protected before they do get damaged beyond repair. But we're trying to get a head start on it to protect the trees with a layer of mulch," said Dan Musholt, from the troop.

Musholt said today's work emphasized to the troops what community service can do. Quincy's tree canopy is historic, having been recognized more than once from "Tree City USA."
