HANNIBAL, MO. -- Millions of people hit the web for Cyber Monday, but even more will pick up the phone to order their holiday gifts this season.
KHQA found out how one local company's seeing more and more calls every year, despite the popularity of online shopping.
"This is by far the busiest time of the year for us," said Rich Rice, the site manager for SC Data Center in Hannibal.
The company handles millions of sales for the famous Swiss Colony through phone calls and the web.
"The volume of our calls increases exponentially the weekend after Thanksgiving. And that'll continue all the way through the week of Christmas," said Rice.
A boost in sales means an increase in staff.
"Each year about this time, we more than double the size of our staff," said Rice.
With more than 900 people on staff throughout the day, the phones are ringing off the hook. The biggest sales of the day?
"Cheese obviously, summer sausage. We delivered a little over 600 thousand pounds of chocolate last year," said Rice.
Shopping online may be more convenient, but for many, its the personal service that will stay in the family for years to come.
"I've heard from a lot of our customers that say that ordering from Swiss Colony is the tradition in the family. In some cases, they have a departed family member that they're ordering for to keep the tradition alive. So it's just something they're used to doing this way," said Rice.
SC Data Center also handles calls for six different companies aside from Swiss Colony. It's partnered with: Seventh Avenue, Midnight Velvet, Ginny's, Country Door, Monroe and Main, and the Tender Filet.
