Friends of the Trails hoping to make bicycling and walking more popular

QUINCY, ILL. -- A Quincy group is hoping to bring the popularity of biking and walking from Amsterdam to the Gem City.

That is the vision of the Friends of the Trails.

The plan of how to get to that goal was discussed at the groups annual membership luncheon Wednesday, January 12th.

President of the group Greg Davis said the meeting was meant to set new goals and ideas for the upcoming year and beyond.

We asked what 2011 will hold for the Friends of the Trails.

"We hope to continue with the Safe Routes to School Program, where we have another grant and work that is going to develop around St. Dominic School. And then we're filling in some gaps in the trail ways plan, particularly down on the river front and looking on doing some more development for the Cedar Creek Trail," said Davis.  "The whole idea here is that yes, Amsterdam is different than Quincy, Illinois, but there are a lot of things that they have done that Quincy can do to make bicycling and walking pedestrian use a very viable use of transportation here. "

Davis hopes people keep an open mind about getting away from vehicles being our main means of transportation and begin looking at walking and bicycling as viable methods as well.
