MACOMB, ILL. -- UPDATE

Results of the 2010 census are hurting Macomb's budget. The city lost population, so it will lose 89 thousand dollars in state funding.

The city will not hire back six positions, including three eliminated police officers and three open jobs in the city's public works department.  That saves the city $400 thousand.

Macomb will hold off on many equipment purchases.

And in the meantime, the city is facing higher insurance costs and mandated pay increases, not to mention things that can't be anticipated right now.

City Administrator Dean Torreson "We've been negotiating with the police FOP for months and that has stalled out so the outcome of the arbitration could come back and affect some of the other pay increases, that we have already figured into the budget for next year."

The city's budget is 34 and a half million dollars.

The city's general fund is sitting at $8.5 million with a deficit of about $43 thousand.

That most likely will be made up from the city's cash reserves.

-ORIGINAL STORY-

The city of Macomb has a new proposed budget of $34.5 million. That's an $6.3 million increase. City Administrator Dean Torreson says a larger grant income accounts for the increase.

But there are several other issues lingering. The city has not replaced 3 police officers. Plus, employee's could see a pay increase.
