MONROE CITY, MO. -- The Missouri Clean Water Commission is giving Mark Twain Landing 30 days to address issues at its wastewater treatment facility.

The state's Water Protection Program had asked the commission to refer the matter to the Missouri Attorney General's office for legal action, including providing an estimate of what a list of penalties could cost the facility.

The estimated penalties involved $32,997.00 in civil penalty fines, and $1,495.15 in investigative costs.

The report released May 4, 2011 says Department of Natural Resources staff observed partially-treated wastewater being discharged less than a half- mile upstream from Mark Twain Lake during inspections conducted from 2007 to 2010.

Mark Twain Landing manager Rita Owen tells KHQA the facility has worked out all issues, and that an engineer will visit the site soon to address the situation.

The report states the improper discharge was due to a failure in part of the wastewater treatment or land application system.
