In our Facebook Story of the Day for May 24, we talk about a risk involved with ditching your landline phone.

You probably remember your parents teaching you your home phone number and address in case of emergencies.
But those lessons have definitely changed in the digital age.
KHQA's Rajah Maples spoke with one concerned grandparent about those changes and took them to an area 911 center for answers.
Many people have ditched their landline phones in lieu of cell phones. And that has Janice Vogel concerned about her grandson in case of an emergency.
She said, "He's not going to learn his home phone number, because he doesn't have a home phone number. It's mom's cell phone number. What if he had an emergency at home and something happened to his mother, and he wanted to call me or needed to call 911. How's he going to do that? I can barely operate his mother's phone."
Adams County 911 Director Steve Rowlands said, "I like to tell people who have a high likelihood of calling 911 to think twice about giving up a landline phone in favor of a cell phone only. The reason being is when you dial 911 on a landline phone, you know exactly where you are. It gives you the exact address. A cellular phone is harder for us to locate the caller than it is from a landline phone. With a cell phone, you have to unlock the phone, get to the right menu and then find the dial pad if it's one of those touch screens and dial 911. Then you have to hit send or something like that, so dialing 911 from a cell phone is more complex than it is from a landline phone.
Adams County 911 Director Steve Rowlands says it's a good idea to teach your child how to turn on the cell phone, how to unlock the screen/keypad and how to make a cellular call, including 911.
The other side of that coin is--you don't want your child to use your cell phone to dial 911 when it's not necessary either.
You can find a number of resources to help you teach your child how to dial 911 using a cell phone and when not to below.

We've done a story recently about how a growing number of people in our area are ditching the landline and going mobile, but this raises new concerns.
One grandmother contacted KHQA regarding her family's situation.
With no landline, how do you teach your child to dial 911 from a smart phone?
KHQA's Rajah Maples will have more on this story Tuesday after talking with this local family, so check this story later and watch KHQA's News at Five, KHQA's Evening News at 6 p.m. and KHQA's Late News at 10 p.m.
