CHICAGO (AP) -- As the temperatures start to drop, Illinois state officials are reminding low income residents and seniors about heating assistance grants.

Money is available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

To qualify, individuals must meet specific income requirements. (For a single-person household that means a monthly income of up to $1,276. For a family of four that means a monthly income of up to $2,581.)

Governor Rod Blagojevich says the program ensures that people don't have to chose between paying for medications and food over paying for electricity bills.

The winter heating program is expected to help about 300,000 households in Illinois.
