How would you react if an armed intruder came into your workplace?

Have you ever even thought about it?

The Hannibal Regional Healthcare System has and is doing something about it.

For the past two days a risk management company called Mitigation Dynamics, Inc. has been conducted exercises on the HRH campus.

The exercises are designed to give employees the necessary skills to recognize and appropriately react to violence in the workplace.

"There's increased violence in society. There's increased violence in the workplace. There's gang activity, there's drug activity in the area. All these come into play in the work place and cause behaviors that have to be dealt with. We need to learn the skills of how to mitigate that," said Doug Ruble, HRH VP of Facilities.

"As of 2010 we had 34 incidents in hospitals where there was an armed intruder. What they are given are tools in which they have to operate from, which they did not have before. A different mindset and understanding that they do have options if something like this does happen," said Co-owner of Mitigation Dynamics, Inc.

Participants from over 50 organizations throughout the state came to Hannibal for the seminar.
