QUINCY, ILL. -- The Quincy Salvation Army's Kroc Center is set to open on September 18th.
One of the great things about the Kroc Center is the view you get from the top floor, unless you look to the north.
Across Broadway is a vacant building that's falling into disrepair.
Major Dan Jennings says, "We'd love to see what's there now raised. It's a public nuisance. It's got to be a safety risk as well. We'd like to see something different. At the very least, we'd love to see at least green space."
Major Dan Jennings says at this point anything would be better. Retail, maybe a restaurant, even the Salvation Army might be interested in the property.
Major Jennings says, "It might make a great place for a new thrift store. It might make a great place for outdoor recreation for us as a future development."
Major Jennings says the Salvation Army has had some contact with the property owner in the past several months, but were not able to come together on a price for the property. Now, things have changed with the property owner.
Chuck Bevelheimer says, "Currently, the bankruptcy trustee has the deed on the property, and we expect sometime by mid-August that that will be in the bank's hands and ownership of record. Then we will talk to the bank to continue to more than likely remove those buildings."
Bevelheimer says he believes the buildings are far too gone to be rehabbed. Bottom line, with the Kroc Center and new Adams County Health Department building, the downtown area is getting a facelift.
Major Jennings says, "This is the welcoming corridor into Quincy from the west. This is what they see. This is not a welcoming site."
By the way, the Salvation Army Family Service Department is getting ready to move to the former Adams County Health Department building at the courthouse.
It will be closed this Wednesday through Friday to make the move.
It'll reopen on Monday August eighth to continue its services which includes the food pantry, rent and utility assistance, and more.
It'll be housed in this temporary location until the new Shelter and Family Services building across the street from the Kroc Center opens.
That's expected to open next Summer.
