FORT MADISON, IOWA (AP) -- A Fort Madison couple has been sentenced to prison for starving a 5-year-old girl in their care.

The Hawk Eye reports 58-year-old Karen Sue Huston was sentenced Friday in Lee County District Court to 15 years in prison, the maximum for child endangerment causing serious injury. Her husband, 65-year-old Frederick Wayne Huston, was given two years for aggravated child endangerment.

The pair was convicted at a June trial.

The Department of Human Services began investigating the Hustons last fall. Court documents say the girl was removed from their home because she was malnourished and weighed just 34 pounds. She was treated at hospital for a week.

The girl's father and stepmother have been placed on probation in the case. The stepmother is the Hustons' daughter.
