MACOMB, ILL. -- It's been three years in the making and a lot of hard work but shoppers in Macomb now have a new option for grocery shopping.
Terry and Mary Helen Sparrow opened Jackson Street Market Wednesday.
"We envisioned how it was going to look and put it all together mentally. And, to see it all come to life is really neat," said Terry Sparrow.
They decided on the west part of town because they owned the building, and because there isn't a grocery store over there.
Jackson Street Market offers some locally grown fruits and vegetables and choice meat and deli.
They hope to be a store for the entire community.
"We're not quite fully stocked yet. We have a lot of specialty items coming in and we're asking our customers what they want because that's what we want to do. We want to give back to our community and we want to give what the local people are looking for," says Mary.
The Sparrows say they didn't do much advertising so they're happy with the turn out on the first day.
"It's kind of like, the sigh, you know. You just take that deep breath and say okay, we did it. It's open, it's working," said Terry.
And they're not done. They still have plans to make homemade casseroles for people to pick up for lunch or dinner.
You can find Jackson Street Market on the corner of Jackson Street and South Collins Ave on the east side of the building.
