According to an article in USA Today, a researcher says an anomaly in the airway of a child with autism may be a marker for the condition.

Dr. Barbara Stewart tells USA Today while examining children with autism who had a persistent cough, she could see a difference in the children's windpipe.

The windpipe of a typical lung branches off into two airways, which in turn branch off like tree limbs.

In autistic children, the windpipe branches were doubled and more symmetrical leading into the lungs.

The researcher admits she doesn't know what the significance is just yet because more research needs to be done.
