Demolition of the old YMCA in Hannibal is slated to begin Monday.

You'll recall late last month crews discovered asbestos in the structure during an inspection.

That meant additional time was needed to hire a specialist to oversee asbestos removal work on the demolition.

According to the Courier Post, that person has been hired and work to demolish the crumbling structure will kick off this week.

Demolition is expected to cost 60 thousand dollars, plus the cost of the asbestos removal.

The former home of the Hannibal YMCA will be demolished.

That was one of 15 resolutions approved by the Hannibal City Council Tuesday night.

WTAD reports that Smashey and Sons construction won the bid to tear down the 100 year old building at 5th and Center for 60 thousand dollars.

The company has 45 days to complete the demolition which is expected to start by the end of the week.

The council also approved an agreement for the easement of the final piece of property along the proposed Stardust Drive extension.

A chance to bid on that project will be advertised in the next month or so.

In other business Council members are moving forward with plans to change the composition of five of Hannibal's six wards.

Ward revisions are necessary because of population shifts within the city brought to light by the 2010 census.
