ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Don't view Thanksgiving as an opportunity to get off the healthy eating wagon for the next six weeks.

That indulgence could cost you up to 10 pounds you may never lose.

Experts caution Americans not to throw good habits out the window on Turkey Day and into the holiday season. Instead, they

say, choose carefully, eat slowly, and savor.

Dietitians say the next six weeks of holiday celebration can be dangerous for those who struggle with their weight.

Experts suggest sampling favorite foods in moderation, cutting back on alcohol and high-caloric drinks, and exercising.

And, they say, don't feel you must eat everything on the menu.

An average Thanksgiving meal has 2,000 to 3,000 calories.

If you do overeat, don't get stuck in the guilt. Start afresh on Friday.
