SPRINGFIELD, ILL. -- Your utility bills may be a step closer to going up.

Ameren has filed a rate-hike plan with the Illinois Commerce Commission.

Ameren says the filing is the start of an effort to modernize the utility's distribution grid.

If approved, the rate hike takes effect in October.
